Building Automation Systems – Benefits, History, Expectations, Testing, and Long-Term Serviceability

Mark Rockwood (PE, QCxP, LEED AP), a Project Engineer in Elara Engineering’s Building Performance Group, recently published an article in the 2024 Autumn issue of Chicagoland Buildings & Environments entitled “Building Automation Systems – Benefits, History, Expectations, Testing, and Long-Term Serviceability.”

A modern Building Automation System (BAS) provides a centralized interface that can be used to remotely monitor and control various building systems, including, but not limited to heating, cooling, ventilation, access control, lighting, etc.

Mark’s article covers the history and impact of legacy Building Automation Systems, BAS standardization over time, planning and executing BAS upgrades or repairs, and the importance of securing software tools needed for long-term serviceability.
