This past Tuesday, Elara Engineering’s Charlie Saville, Sustainability Lead, spearheaded an impressive panel of industry professionals for the Net Zero Innovation: Journey to a More Sustainable Future presentation. The presentation highlighted the Park District of Oak Park’s progress toward Net-Zero Energy (NZE), with panel members touching on how high-performance building design and technologies are driving successful results.
NZE buildings are highly efficient structures that generate as much renewable energy on-site as they consume annually. These buildings integrate high-performance envelopes and efficient HVAC systems, with renewable and clean energy sources such as solar or wind.
Charlie emphasized two critical starting points in NZE design:
- Load Management
- System and Design Optimization
He also outlined five key challenges often encountered in the design process:
- Financial: high upfront “first” costs
- Technical Construction: need for specialized construction, commissioning, and verification
- Environmental & Location: climate and site constraints
- Industry Knowledge: familiarity with NZE and high-performance design
- Regulatory & Policy: navigating evolving policies and codes
Elara Engineering commends Oak Park in their impressive 10-year journey toward a net-zero future. As has always been part of our core values, we remain committed to advancing sustainable design and supporting our clients on a path toward a net-zero future!
